At OAC Highett, our Bush Kinder program is designed to provide children with meaningful opportunities to explore the natural environment, build essential life skills, and develop a sense of responsibility for the world around them. Through weekly excursions to Cheltenham Park, children engage in hands-on experiences that support their physical, social, and cognitive development while fostering a love for the outdoors.

Our Bush Kinder program focuses on key developmental areas, including:

Risky Play: Children are encouraged to engage in age-appropriate risky play, such as climbing trees, balancing on logs, and exploring uneven terrains. These activities help develop resilience, problem-solving skills, and self-confidence, as children learn to assess risks and make informed decisions in a safe and supportive environment.

School Readiness: Bush Kinder fosters essential skills for school readiness by promoting independence, critical thinking, and collaboration. Through nature-based activities, children enhance their ability to focus, follow instructions, and develop fine and gross motor skills that support their transition to formal education.

Physical Education: Outdoor exploration provides ample opportunities for physical activity, strengthening children’s coordination, balance, and overall fitness. Running, jumping, and navigating natural landscapes contribute to their physical well-being while promoting healthy lifestyle habits.

Connection to Nature: Through hands-on experiences in the park, children develop an appreciation for the environment and learn about sustainability practices such as caring for plants, understanding local wildlife, and recognizing seasonal changes.

Cultural Appreciation and Respect: While our program incorporates Indigenous perspectives and teachings, we also celebrate the diverse cultural backgrounds of our families. Children are encouraged to share their own cultural connections to nature, fostering a sense of inclusivity and respect for different ways of understanding and caring for the environment.

One of the unique aspects of our Bush Kinder program is the practice of Dadirri, a deep listening approach inspired by Indigenous wisdom. This practice helps children slow down, observe, and connect with their surroundings, enhancing their mindfulness and emotional well-being.

Through the Bush Kinder program, children embark on a journey of discovery, growth, and connection, developing valuable skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. We invite families to be part of this exciting experience and support their children’s adventures in nature.

At Only About Children, we see ourselves as More Than Childcare. Our unique approach goes beyond education to encompass the health and total wellbeing of every child. If you’d like to learn more about our campus and what we offer, we invite you to book a tour today.
